Tchaikovsky²
TCHAIKOVSKY: SERENADE FOR STRINGS: ELEGY
TCHAIKOVSKY: SOUVENIR DE FLORENCE: ADAGIO CANTABILE
+
These two slow movements, structured and cast so similarly, both feature timeless melodies that begin from a place of effervescent simplicity. At first, the charming refrains dance around each other. But before long, the line from each string instrument slowly fans out into the realization of proto-Schonberg chords. They coalesce into luxurious tonal harmonies before descending into once chaos again. Each video’s texture takes its turn in the spotlight, with the solo lines from Souvenir ascending to the top before the swells from the Elegy wash over the soundscape. It would be a remarkeable feat to perform something like Tchaikovsky² live without the use of multiple skilled conductors, much like Charles Ives' Symphony No. 4.
Curated Listen Time: 5 minutes (with both A-Sections concluding concurrently)
