COPELAND CONDUCTS APPALACHIAN SPRING
BILL EVANS: I FALL IN LOVE TOO EASILY (TAKE 3)
+
The simplicity of these two compositions contrasts sharply with the chaos of 1944 - their shared year of composition. When played at the curated time stamps, the affectionate piano line is interlaced with Copeland's flute meditation that closes the timeless work. It is remarkable that the two videos played at the same time are able to preserve so much simplicity while unfolding simultaneously. It is even more striking that they achieve this while drawing upon two separate American musical dialects.
Viewing all the way until the end of the work rewards the viewer with a charming alignment: Bill Evans concludes the recording with a dreamy tag just as Copeland himself cues the final twinkling notes. He slips a small smile to the orchestra signaling the close of the piece. The disparate halves of this creation conjure up a soundscape that is more than the sum of its parts.
Curated Listen Time: 2 min 45 sec (until Copeland smiles)
