KENNY G: FOREVER IN LOVE

MAHLER: SYMPHONY No. 5: ADAGIETTO
This title, a play on "opposite sex," appropriately frames these two saxophone players as opposites. John Coltrane and Kenny G are two towering figures in saxophone spheres, but they hardly share any crossover audience. In the world of jazz, Kenny G is as scorned as Coltrane is revered. And yet, the double helix of saxophone lines seem to revolve around each other assiduously, conscious of each other. The textures unfold underneath the saccharine sheen of Mahler’s transcendent Adagietto to great effect as the sentimental and trite energy from Kenny G is balanced by Coltrane’s signature figurations. The result is a chaotic sonic vista that somehow captures perpetual motion and suspended repose at once. Listening to the soundscape while focusing on Myung-Whun Chung's intimate gestures in the Mahler video imbue the experience with a sense of unironic gravity.
Curated Listen Time: Until Coltrane abandons the vestiges of tonality or until the chaos is overwhelming. Whichever comes first
