BEETHOVEN STRING QUARTET Op. 59 No. 2: II: MOLTO ADAGIO

FLAVIEN BERGER: DYADE

The addition of a double bass to the traditional string quartet texture re-centers the entire work as the bass role pivots back and forth between the bedrock of the harmony and maudlin melody. Some might hear Mr. Lee's rendering as bathetic and overpowering, but at 0.25x speed, the overwrought qualities blossom into aching resolutions. The sentimental piano from Dyade supports and sustains the affect. When the vocals are introduced (about 50 seconds in) a dialogue between voice and double bass emerges with the Beethoven providing a passionate and ravishing atmosphere.
